BEAR COAT FOR 7 1/2" DOLL
Riley coat
Riley coat

Riley coat
Riley coat
Materials/notes : Knitting needles with a 2.5 mm diameter (#2.5 needles in France)
Polyamide yarn with a gauge of 36 stitches x 48 rows (with 2.5 mm needles) for a 10 cm x 10 cm square (I used Muguet from Anny Blatt)
3 buttons
1 cm = 10 mm, 1 inch = 2.54 cm

Coat :

Back

Cast 38 stitches in blue using 2.5 mm needles. Knit the first 4 rows in garter stitch, then continue in stockinette.
Decrease one stitch at the beginning and end of rows 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33 and 37. To decrease :
At the beginning of the row : knit one stitch, then knit the next 2 stitches together.
At the end of the row : when you have 3 stitches left on the left needle, slide the first stitch to the right needle without knitting it, knit the second stitch and pass the first stitch over the second stitch, then knit the third stitch.
After 38 rows you have 20 stitches left. Put on hold.

Front

The front of the coat is done in 2 symmetrical parts.

Right side :
Prepare the pocket lining : cast 5 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit 6 rows in stockinette then put on hold.
Cast 20 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit the first 4 rows in garter stitch, then continue in stockinette but with a 3-stitch-wide border in garter stitch on the left-hand side.
Decrease one stitch at the beginning of rows 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33 and 37.
To make the pocket : at row 17, knit the first 4 stitches normally. Put the next 5 stitches on hold by threading a bit of different-colored (say red) yarn through them and tying the bit of yarn. Instead of these 5 stitches, and continuing with your blue yarn, knit the 5 stitches of the pocket lining, then finish the row normally.
After 38 rows you have 11 stitches left. Put on hold.
Left side :
Prepare the pocket lining : cast 5 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit 6 rows in stockinette then put on hold.
Cast 20 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit the first 4 rows in garter stitch, then continue in stockinette but with a 3-stitch-wide border in garter stitch on the right-hand side.
Decrease one stitch at the end of rows 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33 and 37.
Make buttonholes at rows 1 and 23 (to make a buttonhole, knit the first stitch of the row normally, pass the yarn over the right needle and knit the next 2 stitches together).
To make the pocket : at row 17, knit the first 7 stitches normally.

Sleeves

Cast 18 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit the first 2 rows in garter stitch, then 22 rows in stockinette.
Put on hold. Make the second sleeve in the same way.

Neckline

Transfer all the pieces to a single 2.5 mm needle in the following order : right front, sleeve, back, sleeve, left front.
Knit 10 rows in stockinette, but beginning and ending each row with 3 stitches in garter stitch (the different pieces will be joined after the first row when you have knit them all with the same yarn), decreasing one stitch at the end of the left back bodice, at the beginning and end of both sleeves and of the front bodice, and at the beginning of the right back bodice, for rows 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 (to decrease at the end of a piece, knit the last 2 stitches of the piece together; to decrease at the beginning of a piece, transfer the first stitch of the piece to the right needle without knitting it, knit the second stitch normally, and slide the first stitch over the second one).
Make a buttonhole at row 7.
You have 38 stitches left.
Cast off.

Hood

Cast 46 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Knit 4 rows in garter stitch, then 24 rows in stockinette. You have 28 rows in total.
Continue in stockinette.
At row 29, knit 23 stitches and put the next 23 on hold. Continue with the first 23 stitches, you'll make the left side later.
Cast off one stitch at the beginning of rows 30 and 32, 2 stitches at the beginning of rows 33 and 34, 3 stitches at the beginning of row 35, 2 stitches at the beginning of row 36, 3 stitches at the beginning of row 37, 2 stitches at the beginning of row 38. You have 7 stitches left. Cast off.
Take the 23 stitches you had left on hold and with a new piece of yarn, make the left side :
Cast off one stitch at the beginning of rows 29 and 31, 2 stitches at the beginning of rows 33, 34 and 35, 3 stitches at the beginning of row 36, 2 stitches at the beginning of row 37, 3 stitches at the beginning of row 38. You have 7 stitches left. Cast off.

Ears

Cast 8 stitches on 2.5 mm needles. Work in stockinette. Knit 4 straight rows. Cast off 1 stitch at the beginning ot rows 5 and 6, 2 stitches at the beginning of rows 7 and 8. You have 2 stitches left. Knit 2 straight rows. Cast on 2 stitches at the beginning of rows 11 and 12, and 1 stitch at the beginning of rows 12 and 13. Knit 4 more rows and cast off. Make the second ear in the same way.

Finishing

Sew together the sides of the coat and close the sleeves. Sew 3 buttons on the border of the front right corresponding to the position of the buttonholes. To finish each pocket, cut the red yarn and put the 5 stitches back on a 2.5 mm needle. Adding a stitch at the beginning and end of the first row (you have 7 stitches), knit 4 rows in garter stitch and cast off. On the wrong side of the coat, secure the pocket lining to the coat. On the right side of the coat, close each side of the pocket. Sew the hood center seam. Fold each ear in half and sew it right sides together. Turn to the right side and attach to the hood. Sew the hood to the neckline ; you will have to stretch the neckline a little so that it matches the outline of the hood. Voila!
